The Department of Defense has a mission to locate and reestablish communication with relatives of service members missing in past wars. Genealogists assist the military in tracing the family trees of missing-in-action (MIA) and killed-in-action (KIA) soldiers from past conflicts—such as World War II and the Korean War—to locate living next of kin and secure DNA reference samples needed to identify recovered remains. I am part of a team of contract researchers assisting a company who has a contract with the U.S. Army.
